Almost nothing on a supplement shelf can be verified by the person paying for it. This panel holds one exception and it is worth using on day one.

The name. Gymnema sylvestre, gurmar in Hindi, which translates as sugar destroyer. Unusually literal. The gymnemic acids in the leaf bind the sweet receptors on the tongue and occupy them for a stretch.

The test. Put a little sugar on your tongue and pay attention. Take the capsule with your meal as usual. Somewhere inside the next hour, try the sugar again. For many people it arrives as texture and very little else: sand rather than sweetness.

Why it is worth doing. Not because it proves the product works. It establishes exactly one thing, which is that gymnema is present in a quantity large enough to do what gymnema does. On a panel that publishes no individual figures, one confirmed presence is more than every other name offers.

What it leaves untouched. Everything about the other thirteen names, and everything about glucose. A receptor is being occupied on the tongue. That is a local event and it wears off.

If nothing happens. Also information, though weaker. Sensitivity varies between people and the effect is quantity-dependent, so a flat result on one attempt is not an absence. Try it twice before concluding anything.

Why it beats a meter. If the effect you actually want is a quieter late afternoon, this is the closest thing to an early signal available, and it costs a teaspoon of sugar rather than a fortnight of squinting at readings that move for a dozen unrelated reasons.
