The Word Natural

A natural ingredients badge sits on this packaging as it does on most of the aisle. Worth knowing precisely how much weight that word carries.

What it establishes. Origin. The material began in a plant, a mineral or an animal instead of being assembled in a reactor. A statement about provenance, true of everything on this panel.

What it does not establish. Safety, potency, purity, or that the material remains in the state it occupied in the plant. Extraction, concentration and standardisation all happen between the field and the capsule. All three are routine, and none of them forfeits the word natural.

The example that closes the argument. Licorice root is entirely natural. It is also the only name on this panel with a documented ceiling, because sustained glycyrrhizin raises blood pressure and lowers potassium. Natural and harmless are separate words and the first does not deliver the second.

Where the word does work. Beside the other marks on this bottle it narrows things usefully: vegetarian tells you the shell is cellulose rather than gelatin, gluten free and dairy free are allergen statements with definitions behind them, non-GMO is a sourcing claim. All three are checkable in a way that natural alone is not.

How to read a badge row in ten seconds. Ask what each mark could be caught being wrong about. Made in the USA could be. GMP standard could be. Natural very nearly could not, which is why it appears on almost everything and carries almost nothing by itself.
